Surprised by the similarities? Let’s probe further.

The best companies and Fraternities / Chapters have a growth strategy that builds organizational culture, creativity, and innovation. They recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace to acquiring and retaining employees/Brothers and to long-term success.

What are diversity, organizational culture, and inclusion? Diversity is the mix of commonalities and differences among a group of people taking account of all human attributes. Diversity includes everyone and excludes no one.

Culture refers to “what it feels like” and “how things get done” around here. Every organization has a culture, including all companies, Triangle Fraternity, and each Triangle Chapter. Culture includes aspects such as: Who makes the decisions? How are decisions made? How am I supposed to dress here? How open is this place? What does it take to feel welcomed and supported here? Who is in the inner circle; how do people get there? How do I succeed here?

Inclusion refers to the extent to which everyone, regardless of who they are and their background, feels welcomed and supported. Inclusive environments allow and encourage everyone to participate fully and to have full access to all opportunities.

With the ever increasing diversity of our total labor force and our student population, a key question for every organization is, “What type of culture do we need here so that everyone, regardless of background, feels fully included?” Within Triangle, one purpose of the Fraternity’s governing documents is to create such a culture at a National and local level.

Readers of this article will likely have one or both of two perspectives in mind – the business world (yes – this includes high tech!) and Fraternity / Chapter life. The concepts apply to both environments although terminology varies. The rest of this article will use business terminology. The following table compares business and Fraternity / Chapter terminology and concepts. If you are reading from the Fraternity / Chapter perspective, this table should be a helpful guide!

Business Fraternity / Chapter
Labor force (the set of all people available for work) The student population at a particular school
Employees or workforce The Brothers or Brotherhood
Work environment Chapter environment
Talent marketplace Current and future student population
Organizational culture Fraternity and Chapter culture. For Chapters, whether all Brothers live in the same house or apart is one unique influence.
Inclusive and productive work environment Inclusive and productive Fraternity / Chapter environment
Increasing diversity of labor force and employees Increasing diversity of current and future student population and Brotherhood
Access and recruit from the full range of talent; sourcing strategy Access and recruit from all parts of the student population; be seen as an attractive option regardless of the student's background
Contribute at their maximum potential to business results Contribute at their maximum potential to Fraternity / Chapter life, goals, leadership, and teamwork
Want to contribute Same! The culture makes Brothers feel welcomed, respected, and supported so each Brother wants to contribute their time and energy.
Are able to contribute Same! The culture encourages all Brothers to contribute and present no conscious or unconscious barriers to each Brother's being heard and contributing.
Productivity, innovation, and creativity as contributors to business success Same, to Fraternity / Chapter success! The Fraternity and Chapters face increasing competition. The need for effective use of time and new ways of meeting goals has never been greater.
Embedded base of knowledge of potential customer needs Current Brothers' knowledge and understanding of the unique needs of potential new Brothers from different backgrounds and cultures.
Building your company's reputation and ability to attract and retain talented employees, customers, and investors Building the Fraternity's / Chapter's prestige and probity as a "Fraternity of Choice" for students from all backgrounds and cultures.

A high quality workforce and work environment won't happen with yesterday's management practices. You must ensure that all your employees both want to and are able to contribute at their maximum potential. Attracting and retaining employees who:

  • Want to contribute requires that your company access and recruit from the full range of talent in the marketplace.
  • Are able to contribute requires an inclusive work environment that supports their individuality, creativity, innovation, and productivity.

How is all this achieved? Two major factors are having a diverse workforce and an organizational culture that generates and values an inclusive, supportive, and productive work environment. In brief, if you “read backwards” from here back through the preceding paragraphs, the right workforce, culture, and work environment help all employees want to and be able to contribute at their maximum potential, thus generating the business results and reputation a company needs to succeed.

This concept is as simple as it sounds; realizing and sustaining it, however, is a challenge. More thoughts on each element follow.

Demographic trends show rapidly increasing diversity in society and thus in consumers and in the labor force. With global competition, your current local market may be other companies’ new growth opportunity. This raises the bar on your need for productivity, innovation, and creativity. Finally, your growth opportunity may be in non-traditional local, regional, or international markets. Effective product or service design and marketing calls for an ever increasing knowledge and experience base about these new markets.

Whether your company's market is local, national, or global, whether your industry is "old economy" or "new economy", whether you're a manufacturer or a service provider – you confront a choice about your workforce. Thrive by expanding your sourcing strategies, building a more inclusive and supportive work environment, and truly being more inclusive in making hire, development, and promotion decisions. Or, shrivel away from an inability to attract talent and fill vacant positions from a global talent marketplace.

A productive work environment is essential to the sustained business success of any company, association, or non-profit. Your employees and volunteers must be able to focus on their job-related objectives. What might keep them from focusing on their job?

  • Conflict.
  • Fear for their personal safety.
  • The need to keep quiet about their personal and family life.
  • Disrespect.
  • Boredom.
  • Lack of a needed accommodation for a disability.
  • Ineffective or missing communications.

In summary, a strong sustained focus on diversity and inclusion helps you achieve the business results and reputation your company needs by creating a workforce and work environment that:
  • Maximizes your embedded base of knowledge about potential customer needs.
  • Generates creativity and innovation by having and encouraging use of a wide range of perspectives about the business issues at hand.
  • Builds your company’s reputation and ability to attract and retain talented employees, customers, and investors.
